‘Welcome home dear’ to 1950

It is often joked about amongst our family, that due to my husband (Mr D) working and me not, as I’m studying and taking care of our little family, that we have stepped into a time warp and are something out of the 1950s. An era where the fashion was elegant, the music was joyous and the man worked while the woman looked after the family. Which we both kind of like and play on sometimes.

Recently, I decided to play a little joke on Mr D, when he returned home from a week away fishing. The thought came to me whilst I was busily mopping the floors, to ensure a clean and tidy household for him to come home to. As I was mopping away, thinking what a wonderful wife I was, it suddenly dawned on me; I should prepare for his arrival. Just like a true 1950s housewife would do.

When his brother dropped him home, there I was waiting.  Dressed as a 1950s housewife, in a nice frock, heels, one of the kids cooking aprons, my glasses and bright red lipstick. Classic 1950s music playing softly, with fresh flowers, a pot of tea brewing and freshly baked chocolate muffins on the bench, oh and his famous ‘grandpa slippers’ waiting by his chair.  You could just imagine his surprise, not to mention his brother’s, who could barely look at me, before scurrying away.

Although a little crazy, it was spontaneous, made us both smile and was the best welcome home present ever.  Sometimes, stepping out of the norm and doing something silly can bring light-hearted playfulness and break up the monotony of everyday life. Why not step out of your comfort zone and do something for your partner, or even a friend, they would not expect and see the joy and love it can bring, instantly.

Go on; give it a go! I would love to know how you go.
